5k mile CV Axle failure

Post by smacknab »

Just adding to the data that aftermarket CV axles are no good. Which I think is already agreed apon, but this was a quick failure. CV axle for my 99 s70 manual transmission. These CV axles are a pain to find or non existent so when I got this I was just happy to find it. Bought from API in the fall, lasted probably less than 5k miles

Maybe slap on a decent quality boot (GKN) and repack the grease and you can actually get some life from the axle? Presumably the boot split only recently.

Reman axles are such a scourge, thanks for reporting.

Just the boot, and yeah a definitive compatibility index would be super helpful. I've gotten to the point of saying ok maybe buy the axles from Volvo, but then I see threads saying they are remanufactured and not worth it.

Those boots are probably made from that rubber that those $4.99 hand truck/garden cart pneumatic tire wheel assemblies from Harbor Freight are made from.

After replacing the FR outer boot once I decided never again. What a pain in the ass and a nasty dirty job.

For my last torn boot on my 98 S70 FR axle, I bought a Duralast unit from Autozone. Why? Lifetime warranty. If the boot ever fails they will replace the entire thing for free. It's lasted roughly 15k miles and 2 years so far and there are no signs of premature wear.

Not a bad idea, was this for a manual?

Does the middle rib in picture have a piece snipped out of it?
