2005 v70 Front bumper removal

Post by IslandV70 » Sat Apr 04, 2020 11:57 am

For my 2005 V70, is there anything related to rivets involved in taking the front bumper off? I found some DIY videos and it did not look like rivets were involved, but i sort of recall something to do with that. I need to replace a light bulb and install some foglights.
Thanks!

Here are the lights I got: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Bosch-OE-H ... 2749.l2649
Despite the photo, they mount to vertical or horizontal surfaces.

There aren’t any rivets that need to be drilled to remove the bumper skin. There are the following:
  • 6 plastic retainers visible right under the leading edge of the hood once opened.

  • If your car has the headlight wipers, remove them; 8mm nut then wiggle the arm loose, disconnect sprayer hose.
  • Then, with a non-marring pry tool, remove the bumper trim pieces circled in red. Once off, remove the 10/12mm farstners behind the trim pieces. The green circle is pretty representative of where you’ll find these. I said 10/12 because I’ve seen both sizes used. I fact, one car I did had one of each.

  • Then come behind the front of the wheel arch’s. Circled in red you’ll find the head of a T25 torx screw. Unthread it maybe 2-4 turns. Do not back it out completely. Once unthreaded partially, push on it with your thumb or tap it lightly. The T25 is attached to a “wing” that pulls the bumper skin “tight”, and rearward towards the front tires. The wing needs to be pushed forward so you can free the bumper from its grasp.

After that, you can wiggle the bumper skin loose. The fender arch areas can be tricky the first time you remove one. Just go easy & take your time. After the first time, you’ll be able to have it off in 10 minutes or so.

For the fogs, if your car had them originally just hook up the new ones. If the car did not, and you want to retain a factory switch look & functionality, you’ll need a LSM (Light Switch Module - which has the front fog button), a 9441161 relay for your CEM (05 may differ), and CEM programming to permit front fog light function from your new LSM, and obviously fog lights/housings.

On the earlier models they came pre-wired for fogs regardless of if the cars had fogs or not. I’d think your 05 is as well but you’ll know soon enough.

Here’s a view of where your 9441161 relay will need to go on your CEM. Again, 05 may differ as I’ve never owned one.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
My car does not have fogs. I am not sure about the factory fog lamp set up - it seems that it will not allow the fogs on without the headlights, which totally defeats the purpose of having them. I am undecided about the wiring - have to get them on first anyway.
What are the lights I see on your car in the photo?

The main lights (lows/highs) are factory auto-leveling HID’s. They came on some nicely optioned S60’s/V70’s, XC70’s, and in all VR/SR’s. They aren’t super awesome, but do look sort of nice from outside the car.

The fogs - I replaced the factory “projector” fogs with PIAA LED lights in 6000k (LP270’s). One set I did in “driving beam” pattern and one in “fog beam” pattern. If I did it over again, or redo it, I’ll do both sets (all 4 lights) in “driving beam”. I’m not crazy about how it looks in the daylight, but after dark I forget about that. The combined light output is very nice & I don’t like hitting deer. Not that I care about the deer, I just don’t care for the experience of it all & the busted parts I have to replace.

Incorrect - you can have fogs turned on with just parking lights if your CEM is programmed for it. You can have your CEM front lighting set 3 different ways;
  • Driving lights always on regardless of light switch position
  • Driving lights off unless/until light switch is in vertical/up position
  • Driving lights only off in parking light position (parking lights only are on)
Of those 3 CEM DRL lighting configs you can only have fogs on when at least the parking lights are also on. Unless directly wired to a separate accessory switch, there is no way to have only the fogs on. At bare minimum you need to have parking lights also turned on to activate fogs from a factory LSM.

To confuse you further, you can also have your CEM set so your fogs remain on when you switch to high beams.

Also, if you have your fogs turned on & then either turn the car off, or shut your lights off, you always need to manually turn back on your fog lights once the car/DRL’s are turned back on. They don’t come back on automatically. There is no workaround for this.

I don't actually care about having just the fogs on, but they really need to be on with just the parking lights or they are useless. My old 740 Volvo and both my old Mercedes would do this, but somehow this is no longer a thing with newer cars :(
Love your PIAA lights BTW :)

Yes, you can configure your P2 DRL this way so parking lights & fogs are the only ones on. Thanks!

I just got my car back together and found out why this might be. I lost one of the official Volvo bolts, so I took my one remaining one to the hardware store and grabbed a metric bolt that seemed the same. The same metric nut from the store threaded onto either one just fine, so I bought it and took it home. The Volvo bolt used a 12mm socket and the hardware store bolt used a 13mm socket for the SAME SIZE bolt! I had no idea that was possible. It all went back together just fine.

Silly Swedes.

How’d your fogs turn out looking?
Did you wire them up separately with a relay?

I haven't got the lights on yet. The way I was going to mount them didn't work out once I saw what was behind the bumper, I am going to order the official Volvo mount.
