2004 S60 making weird on and off noise from fuel pump

Post by nucci480 »

Weird on and off noise coming from the rear end of 2004 Volvo s60 non-turbo. 171k miles, replaced fuel rail FPS back in October. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you changed the fuel filter?..could be a blockage, you can also check the pump relay however i really think the problem is the pump or a kinked pipe in the tank.

to remove the pump is a "fun job", the less amount of fuel in the tank the better. Buy the removal tool online, i tried making my own but it failed. Remove the rear seats completely, it makes for lots of room and less swearing. Clean the area and lay down rags/sheets to protect carpet etc there will be fuel spillage especially from the bucket the pump sits in. You can pick up a used pump like i did, or buy new just get genuine Volvo (Bosch)

I haven't replaced the fuel filter, it doesn't have the external filter. I was wondering if it was a faulty PCM.

Sorry not familar with those vehicles but it looks like a good place to start checking fairly easy to remove/check voltages etc lots of videos on youtube reporting issues with those things.

When i removed my tank pump i found some rubbish in there from things being dropped it the tank.

Yep nice found. It was shorting inside so forcing the pump to spin for no reason - sometimes it rather cuts it
