T5 2006 Volvo s60

Post by volvomadness » Sun Apr 12, 2020 7:33 pm

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/imag ... 258104.jpg

I just picked up a T5 and looking to do my Breather box which is really clogged, I could use it to inflate balloons. I usually clean out the PTC as part of the job.

I'm use to s60 2.5T. PTC set up but the one on the T5 looks different.

Attached is schematic I'm looking at the 14 area. Does this get clogged as the 2.5T set up?

Thanks Madness

#13 frequently becomes occluded. #14 are crush washers which you’ll want to have new ones to replace old with. You’ll also want to make sure the banjo bolt (#15) is the newer style that has the check valve in it Volvo part 31325709. You can clean & reuse the old one as long as the check valve seems to function properly.

If you are extremely lucky #13 will remain intact & you can clean it for reuse. It becomes very brittle over time & often breaks when you are trying to remove it and/or the banjo bolt/intake manifold. Personally I always have a replacement handy as you will not be able to completely the job if you break the existing one. You can rebuild the old one if you are frugal. Volvo part 30731007.

The reason they say to use new copper crush washer is: The crush washers deform to match the imperfections on the mating surface. Getting one that is already deformed to do that is improbable.

You can reuse Copper Crush Washers IF you resurface them, that is remove the deformities from the surface of the crush washer. Lay sandpaper on a hard flat surface. Work the surface of the washer on the sandpaper until it is flat again. Do both sides. I prefer 600+ wet. It takes more elbow grease but you get a smoother surface.

Copper washers also work hardened and need to be annealed so they are soft and will conform when used again. Get a piece of coat hanger wire and make a hook on the end. Put the washers on the hook and heat them with a propane torch to red hot and then dunk in some water to cool. Now the copper will be very soft and will crush and conform to the surfaces it seals.

Anneal before resurface so the resurfacing will require less work. You concur?
