2003 S60 Gear Selection Display Issues, Hard Shifting

Post by bmdubya1198 » Wed Apr 15, 2020 7:58 pm

I think the transmission in my brother's S60 is finally starting to give up. It's had weird (but typical) shifting issues since I bought it back in August, but now it's showing a transmission service message and shifting really hard. I haven't gotten it to replicate the issues since clearing the codes, but he told me it shifts really hard and he has to use shiftronic.

When I first scanned it with VIDA, I got TCM-002F (lock-up function slipping or not engaged). Cleared the codes, car drove fine for a couple short trips over the next few days. Then yesterday, it started acting up again... except this time, the gear display on the cluster was showing a dash instead of the gear, and the console was showing it to be in D when it was in P. Never seen that happen before. When I put it in gear, it banged HARD. Also made some whines in reverse and drive. So then I check VIDA again, this time it shows TCM-0039 (gear shift position sensor faulty signal). Cleared the code, and everything was back to normal. Gear indicators are correct and it shifts normally again.
The interesting thing here is that when I checked on VIDA, the gear position was showing correctly every time, while the cluster showed either "R" or "-", regardless of the gear and the console showed D or switched around.

Today I took the car for a quick drive to check the trans fluid, and it was a little low but not by much. Added just shy of 4 ounces and it's at the full mark again.

Has anyone had this issue before? I'm not sure if this is just another sign that I'll need to replace the valve body soon, or it's as simple as replacing the PNP switch/gear position sensor. I might just give that a try anyway, it's easy enough to get to.

Do a drain and fill, drive it 500-1000 miles and do another drain and fill. Report back.

Don't throw parts at a problem without doing proper maintenance. Drain and fill is easy and if you do a search many on the forum have resolved their transmission problems by changing out the fluid.

Not sure on your model year, but sometimes moving the gear selector back and forth with a foot on the brake cleans up a crusty connection.

You may have two problems going on - try the suggested cures first.

I did 3 drain and fills a couple months ago as well as replaced the B4 servo cover. I may try one more drain and fill.

I tried rowing the shifter back and forth several times as well, didn't change anything immediately, but like I said I haven't had any codes reappear since clearing yesterday. I'll try to get a chance to drive it tomorrow and see if I can get it do throw more DTCs.

Drove it around the other day after I cleared the codes again, it was driving perfectly normal until I got on the highway, then got the "Transmission service required" message and CEL. Got home, checked the codes, and TCM-002F returned. Display on the shifter was correct, and a "-" on the cluster where the gear indicator should be. Now that I finally drove it with this fault present, it feels fine on the highway, but slowing down, it slammed to downshift. Once I got to a stop and took off again, it felt like it was in 2nd or 3rd gear (a limp home mode, I presume) and eventually slammed into 4th, then it was fine. Shiftronic was not working.

So I'm thinking of a few options...
1- used transmission. I don't love this option since they're a tossup. These AW55s are horrible.
2- valve body repair or replacement. I'm leaning towards this, even though I really don't want to right now.
3- TCM update. I already contacted a local Volvo shop that I would trust (I've owned close to 20 cars, and I've never brought a car anywhere for service before... seriously. Most of you know I do EVERYTHING myself, so this is a big deal to me!) and if nobody else at the time needs an update, I'm looking at $200. I might just buy a VIDA subscription myself, it's only around $70 for a 3 day, I think. The XC90 also needs a TCM update anyway, so it's worth it I think. I just wouldn't want to screw up my VIDA installation since it would overwrite it... I might buy another computer for this purpose.
4- just try to replace that PNP switch and see if that fixes it. I only had the gear position fault once, but maybe that's causing this whole thing. I doubt it, but what the hell... it's easy to replace. But how often do these really fail on P2s?

The shift quality and everything points to the valve body, so I'm afraid it may be time.
