It says meets specifications of jws 3309. Do you think will be OK. I just need to top off. Its At cold mark when hot and noticing delayed shifts. Is that typical with low fluid?

If it's low just top off with any cheap (spec) fluid but the delay shift could be anything. When hot at the Low mark is about a quart and if it does not improve the shift you should just try flushing the system.

I am currently using Havoline in the Transmission and Power Steering (except Honda) for the following 2003's: S80 T6, Lexus GS300 & Honda Odyssey. Did a flush on all 3 vehicles (ATF, PW ST). With the S80 & Odyssey over a year now. Bought 4 from Amazon over a period of time with one case as low as around $35. One case left as I just change the ATF filter and flushed both the Trans and PwSt fluid of the Lexus.
.
Good price at this time in case you decide to flush.

I suspect my fluid was low from changing the radiator. I ended up ordering this to the shop, Just one bottle. 13.69$ couldn't belive it. Its full synthetic, will that mess with the non synthetic fluid already in there? I'd imagine there compatible. But I topped it off. The bottle came with this cool hose that comes out. But I took pictures of the specs. And it says specs and approval List blah blah. Then below saying we also recommend this for blah blah jws3309. So i take it, its not approved for jws3309... But will it be safe? I had a hella time finding jws3309. But Yes I plan on doing a flush, or several drain and fills. Probably the latter. I will check the fluid you used. I'm also hearing people say Jws 3309 is the same as t-iv. But ya this oil seems quality. But to expensive if I have to buy like 12 qts for d&f. Do u guys like my funnel lmao! Hopefully no particals got into it from the ripped cardbored. I should of just used some vice grips with a rag between on the plastic hose, then fit the hose thats comes out the bottle into the fill port and then unclamped the vicegrips. I wasn't home so I didn't have access to much. Best bet probably would of been to attach a hose to it, which would be super easy cause it has like a barb type end on it. Is there a filter in these transmissions?

A lot of people have used Valvoline MaxLife in the red gallon jug from Wal-mart with great success. A lot of people use Toyota T-IV (T-4). And a lot of people use other ATF that “meets the requirements”. Toyota T-IV is typically around $6/qt at a Toyota dealership. MaxLife is around $17-19/gallon.

I think for a temporary top-off you’ll be ok. Me personally, I would never spend $11-13/qt of ATF for any reason. But I do drain/fills every other/every 3rd engine oil change. I think that running less expensive ATF & changing it much more frequently is a better route to take on these cars.

There is a filter but it is so buried inside the trans you’d need to remove the transmission entirely and then dismantle it just to get to the filter. That is a big part of the reasoning behind changing your atf out so frequently via drain & fills.

Good job on the funnel!

To measure, the fluid must be at 80C. To get there, the car must drive at least 30 min in summer time, preferably inside city (highway cools the fluid down) then transmission in P, engine at idle, car on perfect level, look for a thick droplet on the dipstick. Delayed shifts may meant it's slipping, that may be caused by worn fluid.

You also have this option for drain and refill. Refill only through the dipstick tube (don't flush at garages, they may mess up) https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -1161540kt

Shifting has smoothed some. It was about half a qt down or a little more. I think I'm gonna go with the valvoline maxlife for when I do the drain and fills. That's a good price for a gallon. And then I'll be able to get everything at walmart. So that'll be good. But so far so good for this moly oil. Car has 173,754. But well kept dealership maintained before I got it. The fluid is dark but does not smell burnt. Unlike my last car an 855 turbo, that had black and burnt smelling fluid. I did drain and fills. Then down the road I got stuck in the snow and was revving hard back and forth and I ended up loosing reverse. So i drove it for a while with no reverse. Then some guy pulled out in front if me and I got this car from his insurance. They paid $2,900 for the 1994 Volvo 850 turbo. It was on its last leg also. I'm very pleased with the outcome. And both air bags came out. I plowed into a dodge ram truck's side. T'boned him good. The old 850 kept me safe. Some marks on my arm from throwing up my arms and ducking (don't ask lol). because airbag. But the transmission was already damaged. Hense the burnt smell. This car even no there's more miles, I feel safer doing it this time in this s60.

When you switch over, you may want to do a full “Gibbons” type flush. Just look up Gibbons Volvo ATF flush & you should see his video & plenty of fora commentary. Some say it’s a waste, I just like the idea of starting with a system that is pretty much filled with new fluid. Between the ATF cooler, trans case & torque converter it usually takes about 12-13 qts before your ATF begins pumping out crimson & clear red. Then after that, 3.5-4 qt drain & fills on a regular basis (at whichever mileage you choose).

I can vouch for the Valvoline ATF as a flush medium. I've used it a number of times and I think its done a great job. I've been using the Aisin AFW+ on the recommendation from Aisin themselves.

The ATF fluid
Haven't had any issues with it, but haven't noticed any improvements either. I also added an ATF oil filter outside the gearbox, on the return oil line back to the gearbox. The filter itself is cheap and to fit it you need to cut out an appropriate length of the hose to fit the filter. Why Volvo decided to not have an external filter beats me. Does anyone know?

Careful with the funnel. Perhaps it will disintegrate in the trans but wouldn't want to take chance.
