VOLVO XC70 2005 2.5T Turbo oil leak DIM

Post by Laurdor » Thu Apr 23, 2020 11:12 am

Hello!
I am Michael from Poland and I am new here, few months ago I bought Volvo XC70 2005 2.5T and recently I have noticed that I am having oil drops on my driveway from driver side and rarely very few drops under the radiator. Due to the situation in the world, I stated that I would see for myself what was going on there and if it is not very complicated I would DIM. My turbocharger is not the youngest and I will do regeneration soon when my mechanic will open again his workshop but for now there is no blue/black smoke from the exhaust, there is not any weird noises from the turbo but there is oil leak for sure.

Probably oil is leaking from that pipe above, anyone know how to replace that? Should I have to remove front bumper or maybe it is possible to get there from above/below?

I have searched for similar posts with this problem and I am correct that this is probably a leak from the return pipe? Unfortunately you can not see this tube in this photo. What is that small rubber tube?

I will be very grateful for every tip

Hello!

You are right hand drive, yes?
I’d say that first leak is most likely the rubber hose that feeds pressurized air from the “charged air pipe” to the intercooler. Pretty common. Could be cracked or not seated correctly, or has a loose hose clamp. No bumper removal necessary. Just remove the charged air pipe (hose clamp at turbo, hose clamp at intercooler pipe, and a couple T-25 screws), then loosen the 2 hose clamps on the pipe itself. Then just replace it.

If it is right side drive, there is a chance the leak is coming from behind the timing cover as well. You’d need to investigate to be certain. A quick way is to take the two T-30 bolts off the top/drivers side timing cover. Then just peek inside to see if oil is being flung around from the belts inside there.

The second leak is most likely the turbo’s oil drain line. This is definitely not a mandatory thing to fix. It’s about $2 usd in parts and many hours of work on an AWD P2. You have to remove the bevel gear (transfer case) to gain access. Leave it alone.

The small hose coming off the bottom of the turbo inlet plugs into the TCV (turbo control valve, aka boost control valve). In the pic below it corresponds to the brown circle on the TCV. Yellow is wastegate, blue is the lower/smaller nipple on the turbo intake pipe.

I just fixed an oil leak on my xc70, i know how it feels. First thing to do is clean the engine to see where the leak is coming from, im not sure you are able to do this easily in Poland, do you have car washing restrictions like Germany does?maybe try wiping clean area with rags

After a clean engine drive the car a short distance and see where the leak is coming from, if you drive too much the oil will make a big mess again and its hard to see where the leak is coming from.

Oil will get blown by the wind as the car moves so leaks can be very hard to find the source. Good luck

Thanks for all that information.
I have found a scheme for my volvo.

I am left hand drive. This hose you are talking about(number 5) is just a little sweaty and very soft so this will be a good idea to replace it anyway. But hose number 6( this is hose from intercooler to turbo, right?) is very sweaty and probably it leaks from there. Number 15 is very swollen and soft but with no leaks. Basiclly oil is dripping from hose 6 so everything below is coverred in oil as I showed on the picture from my first post. Is there anything serious going on with the turbo or does replacing the hoses do the trick? Am I going to be able to replace hoses number 6 and 15 from the bottom or from above?

Yes,unfortunately in V70 there is a lot of space to fix that leak from oil drain line but in AWD is hard to even see anything so I will probably leave that as it is for now.

Yes we have similiar restrictions in Poland. I will try to clean it tomorrow.

That’s an easy to misread image; it is showing both “R” and 2.5T fitments. The “R” has a split or 2-piece intercooler setup. Unless somebody has fitted one on your car prior to you’re acquisition, you do not have parts 15, 16, & 3a. Also you will have charged air pipe #1 vs 1a. Hose #5 is what I thought I saw in your first image that was leaking.

Pipe #6 connects the “cold”/output side of the intercooler to the underside of your intake manifold (the bulbous thing with 5 metal tubes running to the “front” of your engine). It (#6) is plastic, as is the end tank of the intercooler to which it attaches. Leaks at this junction are common as well. You can undo the hose clamp & try to clean/refit the pipe & retighten the hose clamp.

The only way to know for certain if pipe #6 is cracked & therefore the source of the leak is to remove it entirely. To do this you’ll likely need to remove the “ram air snout” that feeds air to your airbox, loosen hose clamp at intercooler, loosen hose clamp under intake manifold, pull the 1/2 vacuum pipe off nipple, then remove pipe #6.

Edit: all this will be done from above.

Don’t be surprised to find oil/residue/debris inside either #5 or #6.
