Mount thermos or lines first?

Post by TheOtherside »

Still on my oil cooler lines.

Should I mount the oil thermostat first and then put the lines in, or put the lines in the thermostat and then mount it?

Thanks guys!!

Thermostat first,, unless you can 3D visualise well.

The lines have to sit in a fairly tight space so they have to sit right.

They're not supposed to be loose, right?

Correct. Not loose. However, they are not really, really tight either. The plate that holds then in bows with age due to heat and pressure. If it has bowed, flatten it and fit it in reverse.

NOTE** Before fitting the thermostat, check the pipe 'O' ring seats and make sure they are clean. I had issues with the seals leaking twice after the dealer replaced them. Eventually had time to remove the whole thermostat and look at it. They told me to replace the pipes as it was obviously the issue. There was hardened carbonised oil in the recess where the 'O' rings seat and it meant each time they fitted new ones and forced them in they tore the new rings and leak started again. I carefully cleaned the surfaces trying to make sure I did not scratch them to remove the oil deposits. No more leaks.

Did you replace the o-rings and sealing rings, or re-use the old ones?

Also make sure you attached the cages the correct way around. If you look carefully, if I recall correctly, there is a narrow end and a wider end on the cage. I had the same issue when I fitted them the wrong way around. The narrower end should be to the radiator or it lets the pipes sit too far out and oil will bypass the 'o' rings.
