Transmission Fluid the same for 2005 V70 & 2008 S60?

Post by volvooh »

I am going to be doing a 3x fluid change out on my 2005 V70 to current some hard shifts at warm temps, and I was curious if the fluid was the same on later Volvo models, namely, the S60.

I am doing a radiator switch out this weekend and if I end up losing too much transmission fluid when the lines are disconnected, I thought I would pick some up now in case I need to replace some lost transmission fluid. When I have done radiators previously I don't lose more than a few drops of fluid and I am not sure if this will be any different or not.

If I can get my hands on Mobile 3309 that would be preferable, or is Toyota type 4 cheaper?

Mobil 3309 is good for Volvos up to 2011 for sure. What year is S60, and how many miles on your cars? It is best to check ATF fluid level when ATF is hot.

Add extra transmission cooler + Magnefine filter to return line, replace ATF with original 1161640, you need two 4l jugs.

With Mobil and tired valve body the shifts will be more harsh.

I've tried Mobil 1 Synthetic motor oil from 94 on and most recently a year ago and it has been terrible so I've not tried their transmission fluid. That being said for about the same price you can get a case of Synthetic. I don't see Synthetic on the Mobil label. Chevron is the top of the Top Tier in terms of gas. Their transmission fluid has worked great in 3 cars besides 2 of the power-steering system.
.
Approved for more vehicles than Mobil including JW3309, Toy T-IV.

Thanks, all. So I performed a successful R&R of the radiator on the S60. (As a side note, not as bad as anticipated.)

When I checked the ATF level, it was reading squarely in the cold range with the engine at operating temp.

Two questions: How much fluid would likely need to be added (I am thinking just a few oz??). For a top off can I mix 3309? After reading the above comments, the 2008 S60 with 135,000 mi I am concerned 3309 will cause hard shifts. Is there any other alternatives that are compatible with Volvo ATF (I read even Valvoline Max Life).

You may want to take ATF level after an overnight. Then, a second ATF read at idle after a normal driving of 30 minutes. Compare the 2 reads, and then take it from there. If low, then add 60-100ml at a time.

If you're using Simple D&F method then add what drains, only after 3-4 drain and fill cycle with normal drive between each D&F you'll have restored fluid and feel improvement, unless.

Read Simple D&F thread and then follow what is best in your situation.

Some say these is closer to the genuine fluid https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -1161540kt
Not all 3309 fluids have same viscosity at hot so the results may differ

Thanks all. I went conservative and bought Volvo fluid. Will use it to top off the S60 then the remainder for the first D&F for the V70.
