Coolant soaked floorboard soundproofing foam

Post by smacknab » Thu Apr 30, 2020 1:14 pm

Hey friends while doing my AC evaporator I pulled back the driver's floorboard and found it was soaked in coolant. I replaced the heater core about 3 months ago and my coolant level has been steady since then. I'm assuming this coolant is left over from the old leaky core, or from my installation. Either way it was so soaked I cut out a square of the worst parts and I'm gonna try to clean and wet vac it, but I'm wondering if anyone knows an acceptable foam replacement. I'm thinking something from home Depot or available online. Alternatively I might go cut out the floor foam from a junkyard car in a week or two.

I think that is closed cell - if you can find a kiddie pool you can soak it three times, and then pronounce it coolant free.

I think I have foam from the 1998, too

Chances it is either from before the core was replaced or leakage from doing the swap out. As you are in there, check the 'O' ring seals at the connection for the heater core for telltale drip runs. If yo have none and coolant level is staying level the you should be ok. I had one of my cars with a leaking core when bought. Used a shop vac and then a carpet cleaner with carpet soap. Cleaned up well. Like abscate I believe it may be closed cell foam.

I experienced same issue with my car... previous owner changed the heater core a few years ago and never dried the passenger floorboard. I only noticed it a few weeks ago when I was installing an amp I picked up. I cut out the foam and took out the carpet... soaked with water and let hang dry for a few days in the sun then reinstalled the foam with tape. It’s dry now, so good enough for me.

Thanks for the help friends, I shop vac'd it, soaked it in hot water with bleach, vac'd again, soaked again vac'd again, then let it hang in the sun. Seems good enough for me!
