Good day all. I am new to the site and 'new' to Volvos. Bought this V70 about 3 years ago. After driving it to work about 150 miles round trip, found that it used about a quart of oil. Previous owner told me it used about a half quart between oil changes. Got ticked off and parked it.

Fast forward 3 years, coronavirus bored and a 10 year old son looking to tinker with something and we decide to see what the V70 needs. Checked all the liquids, got a fresh battery and she started right up.

Cleaned the windows and took her to the car wash and got the crap cleaned off her. Including a couple of before and after picutres.

Is the car smokey? The valve stem seals can become an issue with age. Are there any oil leaks?

If there are no leaks, what mileage is on the car?

Do you know when the PCV system was last serviced?

Wash the engine down. Add some Ultraviolet (UV) tracer dye to the engine oil. If there is a oil leak you can trace it back to the source with a Ultraviolet light.

Smoke out the tail pipe when you first start it? If so color and smell.

There was a little white smoke after sitting for 2 years not started, but subsequent startups have not had any smoke at all, not any noticeable anyways.

I am guessing the PCV system is in need of being serviced. The car has 243k miles on the clock.

I do not have a driveway, so it is hard to see leaks. I guess I should get a sheet of poster board and run the car to operating temp and put it under to see if there are any obvious leaks. The UV dye is also a great idea. What would be the safest way to wash the engine down? It is not too bad really.

Another annoyance was the shifter button sticking when shifting to Park. Was able to pull the knob off and re-center the spring pin to resolve this issue. But, the bottom of the button hinge is cracked and broken so it will need replacing eventually.

I'll worry with that after I get my wife's 'take this to Goodwill' stuff dropped off and clean the inside of cobwebs. Surprisingly, after 2 years of sitting and being ignored, there is no mold on the inside of the car and it still smells decent.

The shift button can be glued with super glue. You may have to remove the button to get good access. After gluing, use 1500 or 2000 grit paper to polish the glue joint. Hardest part is getting it reassembled.

I have resolved the sticky shifter knob issues by spraying silicone spray through the cracks of the shifter knob button. Quick and easy fix until a new one can be ordered.

Engine degreaser setting at the car wash then power rinse.
