P80 c70 hpt with p0442 and eval emissions never ready

Post by Lasershark »

I have had this car for 12 years and have never really worked on it. Its always just been stock, reliable until it sat for a while while other cars were enjoyed.

Well i need the car now and sprung a p0442 and noticed the evap monitor is never ready or completed (1200miles).

I can turn a wrench (dsm owner) but the terminology I am often unfamiliar with.

Is there a "go to" link or check list I can find or someone can link me? I want to get this fixed before the emissions come due.

Thanks

Hi Lazershark,

Typically, this code comes from cracked or rotted hoses that attach to the charcoal cannister. The cannister should be located either under passenger or driver's side wheel well (don't remember) or underneath the car about 2/3 of the way back on the passenger side. Inspect the quality of those hoses and replace them if they aren't in good condition. Unfortunately EVAP codes can be hard to deal with sometimes as there can be multiple sources but I would start there. One hose to the charcoal cannister is shaped like a J and is shorter, the other is shaped like an L and is longer. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Below is a link to the two hoses you are looking for, along with the charcoal cannister they are attached to. You should not need to replace your charcoal cannister. I'm just placing the parts list for them to show you what you're looking for:

Your charcoal cannister could be one of two kinds:

Got the j hose and L hose replaced. L HOSE ha a visible tear on the long straight part (top of the L) cleared the codes and now we wait to see if it pops back up.
Thanks for taking the time!

Great. If it comes back my second guess would be to check all the tubing that connects to the intake manifold and consider replacing the evap purge valve. I have had two P0455 (large evap leak) codes in my time. One was due to a stuck purge valve, the other was due to rotted and split intake manifold tubing. If none of that works, I would give it a smoke test.

Awesome, thanks Richard! Very helpful hopefully it stays clean of codes as emissions will be coming soon, just re-registered the car last month.
