ETM upgrade for the worst

Post by vizigot »

Did the ETM (software) upgrade today. The car was running smooth before, just the annoying check engine light come and go once in a while (message: emission system service required).
After the "upgrade", when I start the car, the revs would go to the normal 1400rpm (cold start), then (before, after 20 seconds or so, they would go to about 1000 rpm) after the 20 secs they climb to 2000 for another 20 secs or so, and then they will go down to 1000. When driving with 30-40 m/hr, the revs are around 1400 - 1600 (normal), but when you brake, instead of going to the 7-800 range (when you stop), they would go to about 1000, then they will shoot up to about 1500, and then they will go down to the expected 700-800 rpm.
Tomorrow morning I'm at the dealer to take that crap software out. I'm fed up
Engine is running rough and noisier too. You feel like in a T-model F##*@k
Anyone same thing? JRL what's your thought? Don?
Thanks

Obviously something's not right.
Every car I've upgraded over the past year has run much smoother and faster. Bring it back to the dealer

It's too late now. I have it for sale, and bought me a 2003 BMW 530I. Hope there are less problems.
Thanks a lot JRL

I haveupgraded the software in June. The car was running fine for few days/weeks. The same problem started happening. The idling and surging is getting worse. The dealer that time mentioned that Mass Airflow and Fuel tank pressure sensor needed to be replaced. The problem got worse and the exact same symptoms is occurring now and is getting worse. I am feared to drive this vehicle as it may go in Limp mode anytime. The dealer is refusing that the ETM is causing the symptoms.

Any suggestions. The software is not taking care of the problem. I am feeling to file a complaint with NHTSA and anybody related.

Please do let me know what you feel.

Happy Holidays

Suggestions I can think of:
Ask the dealer to show you the codes they're getting.
Take your car to another dealer.

Vizigot, If the software update does not compensate for the faulty ETM, the dealer is supposed to replace the ETM. Has that been done yet?

Hi guys. Thanks for all the support. As I mentioned, I have the car on sale now. I got me a 2003 BMW 530. Hope this one will have less problems, and no hidden BS like the ETM (which the dealer deals with it as he likes - aka change it when it's too late, and probably some more damage inflicted to the car - transmission maybe? which is not covered and you'd have to pay for it)

I just recently bought my s80 so I didn't pay as much as alot of you did, but I still paid a good amount of money for mine. But i loved it. it was fast, safe and loaded.
My wife was driving it and she noticed the rough idle, I did'nt beleive her... the next day she was on her way to pick me up for lunch. she arrived with the car in limp mode. I thought she broke the car. I then got on line and to my surprise, it took me all of 60 seconds to find out what my problem was. All of you know, The ETM.
I brought it to volvo. I told them that the etm was faulty. they looked at it and off the bat they wanted $1750. They said that they could fix the ETM but it also need a mass airflow sensor, a coil pack( I drove for 2 days after the repair still know faulty coil or m.a.f. code), timing belt( done by the preivious owner 25k ago), and repair an oil leak( which was the oil drain plug). i declined all of them but the etm reload and software update. they then tried to get me for the computer diagnostic: $78 , I declined that too( it wasn't as easy as the first!) the car was great again. 24 days later all over again but with out the premature limp home. i am going to bring it to another dealer because of the way i was treated at this one.

24 days.......... come on volvo!!

Never had a problem with my S80. Brought it in for the ETM software fix. Now, it's doing all sorts of lurching/accelerating and then just shuts down.

I'm bringing it in tomorrow morning (having it towed) and demanding the ETM be replaced.

I think the software's clearly causing additional problems for some owners.

OK, what's the deal with this recall at this time? is volvo supposed to change the part, or are they to try a software update first and if that doesn't work then change the part?
my car hesatates when i step on the gas pretty much at any speed. especially if i accellerate, brake, then accellerate again quickly. also if i shut the car off then restart it, sometimes it will be hard to start seeming like it's flooded. are these symptoms of a faulty etm?
