What?! Ferrari mulls move from F1 to IndyCar in 2022

After reviewing its budget cap, Ferrari is seriously considering pulling out from Formula 1 and moving to IndyCar instead.

Team principal Mattia Binotto revealed in an interview that The Prancing Horse brand has both the IndyCar series and top level of the World Endurance Championship in its sights as replacement for their F1 participation after finding budget limitations in the latter series disagreeable.

Yahoo didn't quite get that story correct, unfortunately: https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/2917 ... -cap-plans
In an interview with Sky Italia, team principal Mattia Binotto confirmed IndyCar and the top level of the World Endurance Championship were under consideration as parallel racing programmes alongside F1.

Yes, F1 would definitely not be F1 without Ferrari! That said, I am looking forward to a prancing horse doing the oval here at Texas Motor Speedway :-)

Ferrari has quite often used their clout to threaten the FIA and other governing bodies to get their way. They pulled out of Le Mans in the early 60's to protest the classification of their GT car as a prototype, which made it uncompetitive. They get the FIA to change the F1 rules in their favor as far as profit sharing etc. They make more off F1 than any other team, because of their credibility as "Ferrari."

So I think it's a ploy.

The big issue with Indycar is that it's a spec series. Ferrari would not be allowed to design and build their own chassis, and the engine would have to follow a very strict formula to compete with Ilmor (Chevy is made in England by Ilmor) and Honda (built in California). Indy's bit push is get a third and maybe fourth engine manufacturer into the series, but I think that's a slim possibility - the development costs are just too high, and if you're third fastest and cancel the program, it's a huge PR hit for your brand. There's been talk of Maserati building an engine. Toyota would like a presence in open wheel racing to go along with their Nascar V8 program.
