2005 Volvo S 40 with 207000 miles. The other morning I had driven about 20 minutes including highway driving. After exiting and turning up a road, the red warning symbol lit up and there was a message to shift to a higher gear, I was only doing about 30 mph. The engine was sounding as if misfiring, and had low power, if felt as if one of the ignition coils was bad. I pulled into a parking lot, and shut off the car. After a minute or so I restarted the car. It ran smoothly, and the warring light was gone. I drove to my destination, and parked. When I restarted the car was running smoothly and no warning light and I drove another 20 minutes without incident. When I next drove, again on the highway, after I exited the bad coil symptoms returned. I again stopped the car and then restarted. The car ran smoothly for a mile or two, then the bad coil symptoms returned. I was near home so I just kept driving, after about a mile the car ran smoothly, and continued to run smoothly for another 5 or 6 miles. Now when I start the car it runs smoothly, but I haven’t taken it for a drive. In the past when I have had a coil go bad, it just goes bad, and stays bad until replaced. Is it likely the coil? What else could it be?
