Volvo Repair Database Exaggerated AT movement from P to D

Post by nmontague81 » Fri May 29, 2020 3:00 pm

Having an automatic transmission problem in my '93 945: Shifting from P into D causes the entire car to lurch unnaturally although it doesn't affect the running of the vehicle. Might be old age or might be a symptom of something bigger.

Recently had a transmission drain and fill, new transmission mount installed about four years ago, motor mounts are still good. Any ideas as to what this might be?

Maybe u put back the wrong kind/amountof fluid? Not sure how sensitive these trannys are when it comes to that, but sounds like one of the first things to try. Especially if it ran fine before the drain n fill?

Thank you for tip kallekula. Turns out the filter inside the tranny needed to be replaced. Additionally, the techs used standard ATF 1 transmission fluid instead of Dextron III. Still bucks, but much less. Hopefully it will smooth out the more I drive.

Be careful of young techs working on old technology.

Truth. If you have your tranny fluid changed by anyone other than Volvo specialists, make sure to tell them to use the proper fluid! If possible, get Volvo tranny fluid and bring it to them. Thank you, kallekula, for catching that. You just saved my transmission.

BTW, I was charged for the second drain and fill even though they admitted to using the wrong fluid. My advice: don't be lazy, do the drain and fill yourself, or have Volvo specialists do it. This entire ordeal cost me over $200!
