Seat Belt Pretensioners

Post by Stu70 » Sat May 30, 2020 2:33 pm

Quick question - can ‘00 front belts work in a ‘98. Webbing is deteriorating (according to the inspection agent). I have access to a later car but need to know for sure before I buy unseen...

Check cross compatibility on the Volvo web store parts engine

I think there will be trouble with the pretensioner

They have the same numbers - I checked. But like you I thought they maybe triggered differently. I assume they are triggered electrically through all years. I think I remember a cable travelling up the B pillar...

Can you just remove the material and reload it onto the 1998 reels?

In the UK, EU, and US you can get webbing replacements from shops that do custom work. You send off your seatbelt (the whole assembly) and they'll replace webbing with colour and stitching of your choice before returning it. I'd be shocked if a simar service wasn't available in Oceania, as you have a very active modding scene.

Around £50-80 ea in the UK, similar in the US from what I've seen. This likely makes it more expensive than a replacement from a breaker bit could remain a safe known backup option.

Many thanks for thoughts and ideas.
I’ll do some sniffing around ‘re-threading’ the unit.
Turns out the pretensioners are all electrically actuated. Difference in years means instead of the explosive in the seat, there appears to be a sensor mounted low down on the b- pillar for the seat bag and from what I’ve read the pretensioners are linked to the dash bags.
I do like the idea of having new belts though. I might get these units and have them rebuilt...
