850 thermostat top cover gasket needed?

Post by jonslave » Wed Jun 03, 2020 11:21 am

Is there a gasket between the thermostat and top cover which connects to the top rad hose? Changing mine and I don't see one.

There is no gasket between the 2 halves, but there is a rubber slotted ring that sits around the thermostat circumference which acts as the gasket.

If you go cheap on the rubber gasket, they tend to fall apart with time, i.e. sooner than the interval to replace the thermostat. If it feels like rubber its probably fine, if it feels like plastic it is junk.

I just replaced mine. It was hard and crusty and didnt seal well at all. Get a good brand. I bought Fel-pro. Think they are of decent quality.
