So I thought it a good time to line up my timing marks whilst I'm waiting for the belt tensioner to be delivered.
I grabbed the 30mm socket and went to put in on the crank nut, where is it ?
I know we didn't remove this nut 3 yrs ago when we did the belt and cam seals.
I had a local mechanic do the final timing setup, I wonder if he removed the nut to get better access to the timing mark, supposedly the nut is non reuseable.
If this nut is missing, what exactly holds the crank gear on, the timing belt?
Is this what is causeing the timing belt to wobble, this is crazy.

I pulled ther belt and tensioner, old tensioner matches the new one but shows signs of being over torqued to the poitn that the tab that locks against the block is slightly bent, but I didn't think it was the problem ,
so I dug a bit deeper. Pulled the serpentine pulley and the crank gear has too much slop, some movement is visible side to side.

Engine is in perfect time otherwise.
I'm debating whether to red loctite it on or source a used crank gear from ebay.
I plan to pull the gear and check out the crank splines. ...doesnt bode well.

Its not giving up easy, I got it 1/4 inch so far with a 2 jaw puller.
Its 93F , I'm calling it a day for today unless thunderstorms roll in, just too hot in the garage.

I ordered a new one from fcp , I'll try the steering wheel puller with impact, weather is brutal hot for Maine.
Its soaking now, probably has chattered splines.

Blue loctite in case you need to service the oil pump someday.

got it,
90 minutes to get the puller positioned, then 5 seconds with the little impact.
Only a short 1/2 inch section of spline closest to block is affected.
wait for parts again.
I think I have a main crank oil seal we didn't install the last time, might as well seeing as I'm in there now.

For those playing at home there is a chassis break on the part numbers for the crank pulley hub in 2004

New gear came, I painted the timing marks with touch up paint.
Had to persuade it onto the crankshaft, no slop now.
Blue loctite on the new crank nut.
Idles nicely, no more wandering belt.
I'm considering it solved.
Good til 300K miles.
