Best way to connect my iPhone to my HU-613?

Post by Jonboy74 » Wed Jun 10, 2020 11:05 pm

So, that pretty much says it.

I'm primarily interested in just playing podcasts from my iPhone while I'm driving.

It would be nice to have hands-free connectivity for calls, but that is not a priority, as Bluetooth headset would be used for calls generally.

I'm not afraid to pull the radio out, and I've got a background in electronics.

Requirements: I'm not interested in lots of gimmicks or anything costly/time consuming. I saw a post about building out some kind of Arduino display to go next to the radio, and while that is TOTALLY COOL, I don't have time or desire to do that at this stage. I'd be happy with an 1/8" stereo plug, but Bluetooth might be interesting if it isn't too costly. (I'm not willing to spend much more than $100 on this endeavor)

Also, I'm wondering if there is a way to show an Aux input on the stereo source menu?

Thanks!

Jonboy

You can solder in a Jack into the tape inputs on the circuit Baord, then stick a blank tape into the tape deck to use the tape function. I use a copy of Marcel Marceau Greatest Soundtracks

I’ll confess I Seldom use the plug now, an FM Bluetooth transmitter is easier

You could also buy a bluetooth kit such as GROM kit or Yatour. They used to be pricey a few years buck. I got mine for about $100 five years ago and it still works great.

These types of kits have a jack that hooks up to the back of the HU-613. It detects it as a cd changer. They also come with a mic, usb charger, and 3.5mm jack for aux.

I also noticed that the steering wheel controls work natively to skip songs or answer calls.

But if you want to do something on the very cheap, an fm bluetooth transmitter is the way to go, but you will have noise depending on the FM bands and you will have to plug it into a 12v

Ah, I just did a search - this?

And if I went with Yatour it looks like I would need two kits if I wanted to include hands-free?

Thought about that - because of the noise/interference potential, I'll probably stay away from that solution.

Thanks!

That is correct. I got the cheaper one that lists for $139. I thought it was a bit of coin back in the day, but the ease of installation and 5 years of having it hassle free, it does the job.

I have used the GROM-BT3 unit for years, with the HU-613. It's great for playing podcasts. The mic audio doesn't seem to be great for phone calls, so I use iPhone ear buds for that, unless it's just a conference call where I don't need to say anything.

I really wish the steering wheel buttons could be programmed to activate the -15/+15 second buttons, though.

It makes some soft beeps when it connects up, but basically does the job and was really easy to install. Just have to pull out the unit and plug it into the back.

(I tried an Audiovox unit on my partner's 2003 VW, but it never did work. I ended up getting a CRUX unit for that car that works well.)
