06' XC70 Front sway bar broke - replacement options

Post by Ringo »

The OEM front anti-sway bar broke (it’s hollow- not solid?) and I want to replace with either new OEM or preferably used. According to FCP the OEM bar for my 2006 T5 XC70 is Volvo part #31262929.

I found an ebay listIng from a guy parting out a 2004 S60R. I’ve heard that the R sway bars are also hollow, but they were made with a thicker walled steel and maybe a greater overall diameter? This used one on ebay is marked with a blotch of green paint. I've come to understand that some OEM sway bars are marked with blue, some are marked green, some marked with an X or 2 or a 3 or a white stripe...

I'd like to use the beefier S60R bar, but I don't know how to find out what I might have unless I remove it! FCP says my car takes 31262929 “marked X“ and it the same part also fits the 2004 S60 “marked X, green”

Can anyone give me insight into the markings - do you think I can successfully replace my broken bar with this beefier S60R bar? Are the Rs solid steel or hollow? Do I need different hanging hardware or bushings?
Thanks

Unless you are tracking the car or drive like a demon in the streets just get a bar that will fit your car. Best go with an OE or a bar from a similar model and year as a stiffer front bar will increase under-steer which is not a good feeling. Volvo's design generally creates under-steer.

As for the marking, like the springs I've not seen anyone provide an answer. My take is a combination of spring rates and or to differentiate the various outsource manufacturers.
