No stop lamps  Topic is solved

Post by alpha318 » Thu Jun 18, 2020 12:29 pm

Hello everyone!
I have a 98 Volvo V70 XC Chassis#505073

I have Turn and tail, but not stop lamps.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
I am unable to find a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance!

Are you getting 12V to the rear lights? Have someone press the brake peddle and check if you are getting voltage to the rear light sockets.

If not, check the connector and the brake switch in the engine compartment on the front of the brake booster. There should be a cable running to it. Check the connector is good and that it is getting voltage to it.

Check the fuse for that circuit. I had this issue on my 850. When I touched the brake pedal, activating the brake light switch, the fuse would blow. I performed a lot of continuity and voltage tests with no clues emerging.

Then a longtime Volvo indy tech mentioned having the right bulbs. I had two in one side, one in the other side and they weren't all the same. The 850's have a regulator box, left side rear, that senses if the bulbs are the wrong ones, or one bulb is a little weak—any imbalance it will take out the fuse. NAPA had the spec'd bulbs, I changed them, with only one bulb in each side, and the problem went away.

If the brake light setup in your car is the same as it is in my 96' 850 take a close look at the switch located on the brake pedal. I've had the "no brake light issue" a couple of times in the 12+ years I've had the car. Both of these times I have taken out the switch, cleaned up the contacts, readjusted it and it worked good as new.
