squeaky dash sound

Post by subzerocarfanatic » Sat Jun 20, 2020 10:26 am

Anyone else have this problem, when driving the C70 It squeaks to the point it is annoying. When on a smoother road it is not bad at all but that's the problem, most of our driving is local and the roads are not maintained well.
I know it's a convertible but geez! Anyone have an ideas aside from pulling the dash and installing sound deadening mat or something?

Most likely the same as all P80's. It may affect a C more though as it will have more body twist. It is the broken dash mounts issue.

There are various fixes out there but the most permanent ones involve the removal of whole dash to access the broken mounts and there are various versions on MVS how to repair. Mine involve metal straps, plastic welding and plastic epoxy.

Abscate had a version which may at least prove the point involving butyl tape being tucked down between the windshield and the front of the dash if I recall correctly. It may also be as simple (but I think most unlikely) as the 4 bolts holding the dash to the firewall being loose. To access them requires removing the wiper arms and the plastic shield over the wiper motor to access. One bolt is in Volvo seemingly annoying designs of being placed at a hard to reach position behind the wiper motor. Do NOT over tighten these mounts as you will break them. Just check they are nipped up tight. If they do not move, then from 1-4 of the mounts is broken.

Thanks Neil, I will look at removing the wiper assembly.

Simple stuff first. Open your glovebox while driving. My latch has been making a squeaking noise over bumps! Some tape on latch bar quieted that, then tackle the dreaded dash bolts.

I know it's in the dash, i can lay my hand on top of it while driving and press down a bit and the noise subsides.

One my T5 I stuffed butyl tape down between the glass and dash with an ice pop stick and stopped 99% of squeaks , cosmetically it’s about a 6/10. It would look better if I put another piece over it to dress it up.

On Evita , a 1999 S70 , Abby and I took the dash out, about 75 minutes, and then reglued the mounts with a JB Weld clear epoxy, then put butyl tape on the underside of the dash lip where it touches the metal frame.

Much nicer , invisible application, squeaks gone

What everyone said here is correct. For mine I stuffed the mounts anywhere I could with 2 part epoxy and held it all together with painters tape to cure. Some of my mounts were just cracked and some were busted into 3-4 pieces and had to be puzzled back together. It worked well for my standards, but it's only been a few thousand miles since I've done it.

Very intrigued by the first option, patiently awaiting some images to clarify the process in my head. The thin strip between dash and screen on my T5 is decidedly cracked so I'm positive that's causing the odd rattle (only present on 25'C+ days).

I'm not quite ready to go down the dash out rabbit hole yet...would need more courage and time than I have!

Couple of pictures of the 1999 “ stuffed tape version”. A roll of butyl tape covering this would clean it up but it isn’t too bad
