1996 850R -- Relationship among shifter stuck in park, turn signals, Speedometer, and Odometer

Post by wackenhut »

I noticed something very peculiar today:

I started my car this afternoon and could not shift out of park. It did not click when the brake was suppressed, so I had to use the manual override to put the car into drive. Once moving, my turn signals did not work when moving the stalk up and down, however, the high beams worked when pulling the stalk towards me and the hazard lights worked with the push of the switch. Furthermore, I noticed that the Speedometer and Odometer were not working. I drove on the highway for about 5 miles or roughly 10 minutes and the speedometer shot up to speed, the odometer started rolling, and the turn signals worked. When I finally got home, the shifter would move from Park to Drive without incident. What could possibly going on that relates all of this together?

The radio was working the Fuel gauge was working, the rpm gauge was working, and all of the dash lights. It is very strange. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Aaron

Things in common are power supply(ignition switch) and ground.

If you have not replaced it, then the electrical portion of the ignition switch is most likely the issue. Switch the ignition off and try to start again and see if it does it again. Mine started this way as a random issue and the faults it produced were also random. Stopping and starting again immediately usually found a return to normality until the next time.
