I have tabulated all the part numbers I can find and post images below.

For -1996, it is Hellacious journey into chassis breaks.

From 1997-on isn't too bad

Format is current part number and superseded part numbers in parentheses.

For the record: I have swapped axles around from my two 96 860s to other P80 cars 95-98 without ever paying attention to part numbers, and never had fitment issues.

These would all be automatic, FWD cars. Mix of turbo and non-turbo although running NA axles in a turbo is not recommended, the outer CVs are not as beefy. I've run turbo axles in NA cars however.

My 1999 had the CV ball and cage style on the driver side, both ends , while earlier models I believe use the spider type.

All those part numbers and yet compatibility still to be determined...

yes, 99+ are completely different axles from -98 and they are not interchangeable. Frankly I would suggest devoting separate threads to each to help clarify that for others down the road. :D

Didn’t mean to shut you down at all. :D Knowing which ones can go where is the whole point, and you’ve already made it known that part number exact matches aren’t required

I’ll be trying to fit a pass axle from a 1998 AT FWD TO a 1998 MT FWD shortly, stay tuned .

Chcek the shaft diameter, the axle seal may be different.
