The 1991 240 automatic that I recently bought has had no fourth gear. I've educated myself (thanks to this site) on relays and solenoids.
The switch and arrow light work fine and the relay clicks when using the switch. I picked up a new solenoid and had my mechanic put it in. The only difference is that now when I shift out of park into any other gear, I can hear the solenoid click- before, it didn't. I still don't have my fourth gear, though.
Could this be a problem with the transmission itself?? I'm really hoping the answer is no, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Except for this problem, I'm really enjoying this car.

I would not have thought that you would hear the solenoid click when coming out of park as it should not be activated until you press the button on the lever. When you are in D and press the button do you hear the solenoid click? You should be able to check this by lying at the side of the car and have someone activate the overdrive.when I shift out of park into any other gear, I can hear the solenoid click
If you don't hear a click then check for 12v at the solenoid connection with a test meter.

Thanks for the quick reply. I realized when reading it that I made a mistake. It's not the solenoid, but the relay that clicks each time I move the shifter to/from any position. I'm guessing this doesn't change your response as far as checking for 12V at the solenoid itself?? Also, if I don't have the 12V at the solenoid, then what's the next step?
Thanks in advance for the patience in dealing with a novice.

Again the overdrive relay should not click unless you are engaging the overdrive. It may be some other relay you can hear.
I still think you need to check for 12v at the solenoid. Lack of 12v could be faulty relay, fuse or wiring.
