Last fall I was troubleshooting a stalling problem. I managed to rummage up a used scan tool for a pretty good price in the hope that reading some live data would provide some clues.
I read data from the cheaper stuff first (which all looked good) before I turned to the MAF. The MAF reading would spike higher when the stalling was happening, so I started looking for a replacement. Along the way I found this Delphi MAF probe replacement for under $90, so I decided to take one for the team and give it a try. I think they got me with the included security torx bit. Plus Delphi doesn't have a reputation for peddling total crap.
I knew it was a gamble and the odds weren't that great, but if it worked the payoff would be large. The stalling disappeared, but there was now very subtle yet disconcerting oscillation while running at steady speed under light load on the highway. I was constantly wondering if I was feeling the first hint of losing power, which never really happened. This was nerve wracking enough that after a couple of months I replaced it with a Bosch unit, which is working perfectly.
