4 speed or 5 speed auto? Mine is a 5 speed auto and uses 3309 spec oil. Earlier 4 speeds use a Dex. Can't recall if it is a III or IV.

2000 V70XC? That's the 4 speed auto.
Dex is correct. I personally recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. It's pricey, but great stuff. My original trans went about 270K (before developing an unfixable leak) and shifted very well after years of abuse, towing, high temps, etc.

Thx
it so wierd the way one hears infinite conflicting stories about it
which trans : I'm sure it has 5042 on the boiler plate along where it mates with the engine.
Shift lever has 4 forward positions, I'me guessing 4 speed
why TheFu. make it so difficlult to flush the stuff and then say don't even do it, don't need to honestly I do not think any machine does great with dirty lube
I'm starting to hear a ticking, like touching a fan with a piece of plastic, occasional and brief only, not loud , seems to come from front and or rear wheels,
Nice cars when everything is working right super nice

Ticking is more likely an axle shaft than the trans. I wrote up a note on this a couple of weeks ago. Basically Volvo thought they trans were a sealed for life item assuming Aisin told them. The they started to have lots of trans failing so decided they should be flushed at 50,000 miles. But this was a customer option. Many transmissions have been destroyed by lube shops using power flushes which loosen the lacquer/burnt oil and promptly gummed up the solenoids. Cars sometimes never got to the end of the street following this.
General shops also used the wrong oils from time to time.
Ford were still saying these trans are sealed for life. My brother's European Ford trans started to go at about 100,000 miles as Ford said it didn't need flushing.
So over the years, those who have been on MVS for a long time and had multiple cars have found safe ways to flush the trans either with the drain and fill process or the flush using the top cooling hose.
Then there is the synthetic will cause oil leaks. Early synthetics maybe 290 years ago were thought to damage seals in older cars. Now many users are happily using the newer synthetics with no issues and getting better life spans from their transmissions.
Bottom line: Change the fluid but watch what oil you use and do not power flush the trans.

Neil, thank you for your information which I need to have always
I did flush the trans prior to that engine snafu which has now resolved partly with your help.
It suddenly started missing yesterday, Blue driver code reader briefly showed #3 missing, swapped in a spare from the earlier engine, bingo no more miss.
For the trans I used Castrol transmax Dex/Merc dexIII after quite a lot of laborious searching to decide on that one. I called Castrol a few days ago and they specify that product for Volvo tranmissions
I followed the
1. drain the sump refil with the amount drained
2. then from hoses into radiator for cooling the ATF drain approx 2 qt. increments while running motor, shift lever in different positions, refilling with that amount each time prior to the next increment
3. repeat until the product exiting trans becomes new / fresh in color.
They do not make it easy
I followed a proceedure that named one of the hoses but it was the wrong hose, I had a big mess to clean up;
now I got one of those sheet metal catch basins to limit future mess cleanup
Thanks again
