need some info about a popular p80 engine upgrade

Post by CIK7 »

My plan right now is just to use a 19t and blue injectors with my new 2.3 engine. So bmdubya1198 estimates that his former v70 glt (2.4) rebuild setup might make around 250-260 whp. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=92407
With this in mind, would i lose much capability without the intake upgrades and with the blue injectors? Who here has experience with the v70 (2.3) before and after the intake upgrades that bdub listed? Anyone have dyno results and 0-60?

Common theory, backed by dyno claims, but I have never substantiated them, is that the N/A cams are good for 10 HP.
The intake mods are all in the name of increasing airflow, reducing restrictions in the boost tract. (intake, intercooler, MAF, T/B) because more air equals more power. Consider that the 2000 V/R had a 19T and Blue injectors, with a standard intercooler, intake and ETM. They made 260 HP. Along with the intake mods, the downpipe is a known restriction. after the cat it is less critical, especially if you have done a resonator or muffler delete.

As it showed in the thread, you CAN mod your turbo inlet manifold to accept the N/A throttle Body rather than sourcing a manifold. Aside from the Snabb intake elbow and Throttle body coupler, everything is junkyard parts. For most purposes Blue/green injectors will work interchangeably, find what you can find, and have your tune dialed in for it. ( I just got my N/A cams, intake and throttle body from a 96 850 for $65.00 this weekend.) still tracking down the 99/2000 airbox and 960 MAF and throttle plate.

You CAN get into it to a degree, with small expense. Then do incremental upgrades. And the little switch on the ECU means you can upgrade the tune to accommodate changes, depending on how you work it out with your tuner.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

oh you are fixing to bring your t5 out of coma, eh? nice! where is intercooler located? Im gonna figure out how to add tranny IC. Im not gonna do the cams but might do the IM, TB, MAF housing. Is it possibly to find a decent oilless air intake and poke through somewhere? The warm air outside is way cooler than under hood. Someone cut a square in hood to poke through an oiled K&N. Would be interesting to cut oval in hood behind battery and poke out an oilless cone. Wonder what its like to drive w/o a hood. XD Always cold air and get to show off the beauty. XD By the way, Im gonna buy a bunch of VHT pink enamel paint to paint calipers, engine cover, fuel rail cover, air intake box, and ECU box. First car ever: 09 Impala LT. Painted the calipers pink. Will post pics in about an hour.

Blues and whites are the "interchangeable" ones. Greens are bigger than both (By about 20% flow rate).

My $0.02: driving without a hood is not practical for a every day vehicle. Rain, sleet, snow, and hail will damage or disable your ride.

It’s an instant probable cause to get pulled over.

Reasonable suspicion to initiate traffic stop. Probable cause to pull person out of vehicle or to search vehicle. But really what reasonable suspicion would having my hood off be? Only if it is illegal. Just reading a forum and an obvious drawback to driving w/o a hood would be thieves and tricksters. Im not driving without a hood.
