Messages Display no longer working

Post by Metallo »

Hi folks,

My son's '05 XC70 started with this problem:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/wvw34ixsv1yl71w/2020-07-30.mp4/file

The background noise it is my son turning the knob to display messages.

Any idea on what is generating this issue?
He told me that during the winter, occasionally the display was switching from one message to another, like, from showing average consumption to how much fuel was left and so on.
Probably that was the beginning of something that eventually took to today's end.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Alex

Search for "volvo dim repair" on ebay, or send to XeMoDex ($$$).

Yep looks like classic dim repair to me... XeModex usually has a 10% off sale on Black friday so maybe you can wait until then.

edit: oh you're in canada! Xemodex is a good option for us but I have also heard good things about unitech electronics.. about 1/2 the prices of xemodex

Could be the message rotating selector knob as you said it was playing up, thats where i would start...try taking it apart and cleaning. Cleaning is the fix for most issues ive found.

This being a 06 is supposed to have improved DIM modules, but who knows.. maybe it's only the large green DIM connector behind ? Still worth a check, you have on Youtube how to undo the DIM but the car battery will need to stay disconnected all this time. Sometimes you may find a local TV shop that can fix or check the control board which is not that hard to remove but careful when putting it back not to crush those small springs on it

Hi All,

Thank you very much for your feedback.
I know XeMODEeX and like many others, they are an expensive option.

Therefore, I will start with the rotating know, it is certainly worth a try.
I could not find any instructions or videos on how to take it apart, by chance do you have any useful links?
I doubt I can find it on VIDA.

Thank you!

There are no springs in this kind of DIMs. Start from 2004MY modules they used new PCB. But, if you want to fix it yourself, you have to remove arrows...
We repair any kind of clusters also.

Hi Yagger,

thank you for your message.

I can take apart the cluster but what do you mean by...you have to remove arrows?
Also, what is typically the issue with he DIM? Dirt, soldering?

I would appreciate your help so that I do not start the work 'blind'.

Thank you!

You have to remove needles.

90% of weird glitches in eco-friendly car electronics come from tin pest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_pest

If I have to remove the needles than it is not an easy job, I think.

This is why I asked to start with the rotating knob, I might be lucky to start with that.
