I have a 1998 v70xc that needs a new motor and i found a 2001 v70xc i hope to use as a donor car. Can i put a 2001 motor and trans in a 1998 platform?

So, next step, what is the problem with the original motor, Hole in the block or a burned piston? Or maybe something less drastic that might be fixable...We're here for you.

1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Someone I used to know fitted a 2005 FWD V70 motor into a 98 AWD with stick shift. Like misha says, issue is change of tech. I believe in my friends case he 'down-graded' the engine to a 98 motor by removing the VVC and fitting the earlier car parts.
