Do I have 140hp or 170hp from the factory?

Post by gnalan »

Is there a way to tell which version of the factory setups I have? I don't know if it's the 140hp setup or the 170hp setup. I know the only difference, as far as I know, is the factory programming. It's a 2001 S60 with the B5244S naturally aspirated engine.

I'm more curious than anything. I would assume the 140hp setup would run fairly decent on 87 octane instead of the more expensive 91 octane, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

B5244S 2.4 = 140 hp.
B5244S 2.4i = 170 hp.

In North America the 2.4 na had 168hp. European markets have a different 'marketing' when it comes to engine size and power, so Volvo sold them the exact same engine but with an ECU mod that cut the hp down to 140hp on the base model - they could still get the 168hp model for extra money. They also had a weird 2.0T (a very good engine otherwise). And lucky them, they got the great D5 turbo diesel engine with 163hp and with 251lb⋅ft

Looking at how they skim money on repairs, I have the vague impression they would be slightly hesitant

A 2.0T 5 cylinder? That would be awesome to have. A faster revving engine, and higher rpm limit, plus the head would flow amazingly well and only have to fill 400cc.

The diesel option would be nice too. Diesel fuel is a lot cheaper than what 91 octane gasoline is, and with the higher fuel mileage that would make it even cheaper in comparison to gasoline.
