Slamming Tailgate

I have a 1998 Volvo v70 and always have to slam the tailgate to close it completely.
I can never just click close it.
Does anyone know if that is caused by the floor latch being positioned too far back?
Would shifting it a few mm forward solve the problem?

You are on the right track to look at the position of the floor latch. I would loosen it up then figure out the best position then tighten it back up. My point being, sometimes it needs to move in the opposite direction from what you might expect. Also check the little rubber bumpers out at the sides, see if they are intact and not protruding etc.

If your secondary catch has a rubber or plastic cushion, check that it is not damaged. With extended use these cushions can cause latching problems. Adjustment can help, but may not solve if the cushions are bad.

Today I found I have the tailgate won't latch problem. It may be a contagion. If you read this, wear a mask while opening your tailgate for the next 10 days.
