Removing viscous coupling 2000 Volvo V70xc

Post by Richard99 »

Hello,

I’m trying to remove a viscous coupling from the junkyard but am one bolt shy. Does anyone know a good way to remove that last bolt shown below? It’s the upper passenger side bolt that connects the housing to the rear diff. It’s nestled in between the housing and the gas tank:/

If I recall I use a very long 3/8" or 1/2" socket extension (or extensions) running over the top from the front flange end to where you need to get too. I have a funny feeling it may be 3/8" you have to use.

Once you remove the unit and get it home, stand it on its 'rear' end for a day or so before installing it. The V/C uses a silicon fluid inside and if left sitting too long the fluid drains out of the clutch plates and it will shred on first use.

Good luck!

Thanks, Neil. Gonna try to locate a couple extensions to try to do it over the top as you mentioned. I think I just had one today that wasn't enough length. Thanks for the tip!

Good luck! Before paying for it, try turning the VC unit by hand and feel if the front bearing is smooth and no slop. Also check the front mound bush is not cracked. It is at least easier to replace either item when out, but the bearing is a pain as you have to have a long punch or similar to knock it out from the rear.
