Sounds like a 1960 vw bug

Post by Nathan79 »

Hello Volvo Geniuses... (07 xc70 170k)
So I did a head job & replaced turbo along with all coil wiring. Went to start it up after re-assembly and it sounds exactly like a 1960 VW bug😩. I have checked and rechecked turbo & exhaust manifold nuts/bolts for tightness (I spoze there could be a bolt missing behind the engine in close proximity to manifold & turbo, that connects to the head). I've checked & rechecked spark plug holes & coil packs (although I have not tested coil packs while running to ensure functions). I've checked & rechecked timing...all 3 marks are good.
Any ideas or diagnosis procedures?

Thanks
Nathan

When it's cold....can you start it up and hold your hand in various places to see where any air is jetting out around the manifold? Did you use new gaskets and hardware? All torqued to spec?

You can also put a bit of marvel mystery oil into the manifold and look for smoke pouring out

If you used the individual manifold gaskets, my guess is one slipped off

Went to start the car yesterday morning, but wouldn't fire. Confirned timing... Started to try to get some oil in exhaust manifold by disassembling turbo mounts & as soon as I disconnected the downpipe some fuel came out. "Can't be good right"?

the sound was probably a flooded engine, confirmed by raw fuel in exh.
I'd pull the plugs and clear the cyls with the starter.

Because it was running rough before and it would not start after sitting for a extended period. I'm think leaking fuel injector(s).
