Volvo s40 2.4i 2009 short trim high when vacuum tube connected to intake air box

I hear air leak when engine vacuum connected to air intake box and short trim goes over 20.
When disconnected and plugged, max 6. Long term trim
over 20 all time and P0171 on. Is this a bad intake box?
What this single vacuum line does anyway?
