I have an old alarm system sitting around, with a working siren. Has anyone attempted to wire in an aftermarket siren in place of the crappy factory one? If so did you have any issues with how it worked, or how it got along with the factory alarm system? Just trying to get a working siren that doesn't cost $250.

A aftermarket will not work unless it is designed as a replacement. The Siren is data controlled on the CAN BUS.

You can try what others have done. Cut the case open and replace the battery then epoxy the case back together. It works if the battery has not leaked and ruined the Printed Circuit board.

I think RickHaleParker forgot a "not" in his response.

Assuming this - his response should read: An aftermarket will not work unless it is designed as a replacement. The Siren is data controlled on the CAN BUS.

I am in agreement with his statement, but qualify the statement that it will NOT work without a ton of electrical engineering as a direct replacement. Unless the unit is plug and play (I have never seen one available) - the alarm siren module is part of the CAN BUS system.

I would assume that an aftermarket alarm could be installed as a separate stand alone unit - decoupled from the one that Volvo designed into the vehicle.

I am guessing it would not work seeing the plug goes into a heavily circuit boarded module. Whatever you do if the warning comes on get to it right away before the acid eats the board alive. That repair is still in there but did not fix the problem as the trunk does not open automatically or with the FOB. The warning light will go out from time to time that's about it.
