Quick Sunday Afternoon Tool Tip for tightening hose clamps on turbo outlet hose 31261370

Post by jreed »

Just a quick Sunday afternoon tip to report on a good tool combination that helped fix a small problem:
A 1/4" drive miniature breaker bar with a 7mm socket is slim enough to fit into the tiny space around the turbo outlet hose. It makes it easier (though not easy for me at any rate) to tighten up the hose clamps on the hose. My socket is a 6 point style, which is stronger than 12 point in some cases, but a 12 point socket would make it easier to get aligned onto the hose clamp.
Tightening the upper hose clamp:

And the lower hose clamp:

I learned that if you remove or replace this hose (Volvo part number 31261370, Turbo outlet hose) and don't tighten it up tightly, the car will run OK but eventually you may get an OBD2 code P0133 (Oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 1 circuit slow response) and / or a P0422 (sometimes this one is Pending if not set) which is Main Catalyst Below Threshold (Bank 1).
If you get the above codes, make sure you don't have a leak in the intake somewhere. In my case, the leak was at this hose.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

I had that pressure hose pop off at the intercooler side once. Barely made it to the next turnout before the car stalled.

Mmmmmm, curious post and thanks for sharing the leak information. Im still getting error in Vida on the 00 V70R for fuel trim upper limit and sometimes catalyst. This may be something i have overlooked as possible cuprit. I did inspect the hose, but may not have tightened it down enough.
