I am interested in the new XC90 for my wife and am curious about the AWD system. We currently have an 05 XC70 and the AWD system uses the bevel gear for drive to the rear wheels, which I had to replace due to a failed bearing. Does the new system still use the bevel gear for drive to the rear wheels?
I am also interested in opinions on the hybrid drive that uses electric for the rear wheels compared to the bevel gear approach.

Hi there, I’m sorry nobody answered your question but here you go. The AWD in the 2nd gen uses a bevel gear off the transmission in the front and a differential in the rear. The AWD is a Haldex gen 5 and uses limited slip clutches to sense wheel slip and apply grip.
As long as you keep up on the lubrication schedules, it should last 150k+ miles. Previous gen V70 and XC90 vehicles had high mileage wear problems that were likely to total the car if the bevel gear was found to be bad. In our case the bevel gear costs $1953.

Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.
