Greetings, I am new to post to this this site but ... I am a long time visitor and ... long time Volvo owner.
I currently have 3 Volvos running perfectly.
- 1995 850 Turbo Wagon chasse #132600 w/153K miles
- 2005 V50 T5 chasse #079183 w/245K miles
- 2008 C30 T5 chasse #048672 w/180k miles
I'd say that I'm proficient with turning wrenches and keeping them on the road.
Once I get them running tip top I can't seem to bring myself to sell them.
And now I have purchased another V50 chasse #087350 w/143k miles.
Which brings me to the point
This starts and idles, but it's a bit sluggish as T5's go, and the CEL is on.
I scanned the P Codes. They were as follows (6 in total):
- P0351 ignition Coil 'A' Primary Control Circuit/Open
- P0352 ignition Coil 'B' Primary Control Circuit/Open
- P0354 ignition Coil 'D' Primary Control Circuit/Open
- P0355 ignition Coil 'E' Primary Control Circuit/Open
- P0353 ignition Coil 'C' Primary Control Circuit/Open
- P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor
fyi Yes, I bought the car with the CEL light on, idled and drove ok, at least enough to get it home.
I did some web searches and the fix seemed simple, replace the CPS and 5 ICS's.
So my thought was since I already had a working V50, I'd get it home and swap parts and see if this was the fix.
I swapped the 2 CPS's and the 5 ICP's from the working V50 (#079183) to the failing V50 (#087350).
NOTE:: I kept all the positions the exactly same 1:1.
I started the car, read the codes now there were 3 additional codes (9 in total):
- P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected.
- P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.
- P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected.
I cleared those codes and, and since it was idling fine, I took it for a quick drive to get gas.
I got to the gas station, turned off the motor, got some gas, started the motor and the CEL was on again.
I scanned the codes and the original 6 codes were back.
When I got home I swapped the parts back to the respective cars, all the positions kept 1:1.
The V50 (#079183) runs as it did before, no codes, not even pending nice and peppy
The V50 (#087350) runs as it did before with the same 6 codes, If I clear them and drive
they are pending codes until I stop and start the motor then they are confirmed codes.
assistance is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

After an exhaustive search I decided to pursue the ECM [ P/N 8602839 ] that part on FCP Euro is $1500. Well, I was not 100% confident enough to jump into that plus the dealer programming fees etc likely circa $200+.
So I sent the ECM to SIA Electronics to have it repaired. The process repairs the existing ECM without needing it reprogrammed at the dealer for $219 and has a lifetime warranty. It seemed like a no brainer.
It took about 3 weeks but came back with numerous additional stickers and a spot of black goop sealing the unit. I installed the repaired ECM and turned the key.
Now the issue is the car immobilized.
I'll be following up with them. I'll update the post with the updated status.
I DO hope to help someone in the future.
