P80 turbo head removal, exhaust manifold or down pipe?

Post by abscate »

Planning out my head job on Elizabeth

Question: should I fight the exhaust manifold bolts or the down pipe with the turbo model?

Do I have enough wiggle after removing the exhaust manifold studs nuts to wiggle the head off with the turbo model? This works in the NAs but am unsure about turbo

Im going to renew hoses and hardware so I’m not looking to avoid the work, just trying to plan the rate limiting step of getting the head off and to machine shop

From mike in the P2 forum, hmmm

Snip

The heads are pretty easy to remove on these. You can hang the turbo at the rear while just removing the 4 nuts which attach the exhaust manifold to the turbine housing.

There's your silver bullet. Removal is the same job P2/P80.

Yeah, well this isn't happening on the 1999 HPT

The manifold to turbo flange is angled up so you aren't lifitng the cylinder head from those studs

Once the downpipe nuts are removed and separated from the turbo, will the turbo pull away, maybe with some prying, from the manifold? to clear the manifold studs?

Would pulling the two studs from the manifold outlet allow me to lift up the manifold?

I just installed the head and something happened to the exhaust manifold gaskets during installation, causing a large exhaust leak. Plus the studs feel like they were binding and not going all the way in the head. I think I'll need to pull the exhaust manifold.

Yes on moving the turbo. Down pipe nuts off, move down pipe away. Now turbo to manifold nuts. Lift turbo out.

If you are smart, also line up and start your coolant hoses when you reinstall turbo, much easier than trying to work hoses onto hard pipes in position

I use a line of dental floss to keep the exhaust gaskets in place, get the manifold on, then pull the floss

Can I get away with not removing the turbo and disconnecting the lines from it? but just pushing it away from the exhaust manifold? I saw a picture of your Elizabeth where the downpipe was detached but the turbo was still in place. I know that you pulled the manifold with the head but wondering if the turbo can somehow detach from the manifold with the head still in place.

I think it has to come off the down pipe. I don’t think there is enough play in the exhaust to let the turbo come back enough to clear the studs.

Side to side maybe, but not for-aft
