VIDA works, DiCE does not connect to car. Bad DiCE? Diagnostic steps taken inside

Post by DanSC »

Hello,

I have a clone DiCE unit; one of the "better" ones with multi-color LEDs and a green circuit board. It worked for me several years ago, though now that I need to clear an SRS fault (forgot to disconnect battery before removing seat, oops), it does not recognize the car, a 2001 S80 2.9.

I have the 2014D_RePack version of VIDA running on a fully-updated Win10 computer, which I regularly use for parts lists and repair procedures. I have also tried to use the DiCE in a VM from https://volvodiag.com/. Both exhibit the same behavior.

When I plug in the USB into the computer and the DiCE into the OBDII port, it is visible in ViDA as well as the DiCE Diagnostics program. It passes all the test programs, and displays what appear to be accurate voltages; slightly higher with the car running than with the car just on key position 2.

When I attempt to actually read the car, with the key in position 2 or the engine running, I receive this message:

Not possible to read out information for the vehicle. No response from the vehicle. Possible causes are; Ignition is not on, the vehicle is older than model year 1999, defective CEM/CDM

When I enter the VIN and click the Diagnostics tab, almost every computer appears in the Not Detected orange.
No Diagnostics.PNG
No Diagnostics.PNG (6.55 KiB) Viewed 2731 times
The Firmware Status and USB Com Status lights appear to be normal. I never see the Vehicle interface status light illuminate. My cheap Bluetooth OBD2 reader recognizes the car.

Other diagnostics steps I have tried are completely removing all versions of .NET Framework 4.x from the VM, only installing .NET Framework 4.0 on the VM, and attempting to connect to the car with VDASH. VDASH recognized the DiCE and never connected to the car. Opening the DiCE found no obvious bad traces or components.

The only next step I can think of is buying another DiCE and hoping it works. Do you agree, or are there other steps worthy trying?

It looks like it a communication problem between the OBDII port and the CEM.
Check/Clean OBDII port, CEM connector and wires between the two.

Can you get access to a second Volvo and try it on a different car?

Unfortunately, I do not see physical evidence of debris in the OBDII port, nor of anything amiss in the waiting between the CEM. I also am a single-Volvo household and have not converted any of my friends to Volvo ownership.

I'll try my luck with a new DiCE and report the results for the record.

Go test drive a used Volvo and check it out real well. I always take my laptop and DiCE with me when I buy another one.

I see you are in California. If you are in the San Francisco area. Yagger's shop is in San Jose. He could sort it out in like 30 seconds.

UPDATE: New DiCE unit arrived from China and works perfectly, even with my Windows 10 VIDA installation.

I would link to the eBay listing I purchased from, but it was removed before the DiCE arrived. Such is late-model Volvo ownership.
