Blower works until car is started (?)

Post by danaande »

Hello everyone,

I've rebuilt everything under the hood of a lovely 1990 240 wagon that i bought last year from someone's barn in Kentucky. The engine purrs like it deserves to for such a beautiful car.

As I'm working my way through the interior, however, I've hit a real stumper. The blower motor and control in the cabin all work great--all four settings and off--if I'm in key position one, But as soon as I start the car, whamo. No more blower, no more response from the controls. It just shuts off from whatever speed it was at before starting.

I think I've ruled out anything intermittent by the fact that it did this 20 times in a row, and all at different times. After the car's been running, from a cold start, and so on.

Thank you in advance for any and every suggestion!

I would guess someone has changed the blower power supply wire to have power only in key position 1. Trace the wiring. Do you have a wiring diagram?
240 Volvo repair manuals are plentiful.

Wow--that is an interesting hypothesis. Why in the world would someone do such a thing? Who doesn't want their heat/AC to work when the car is actually running?!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll run the wiring and report. And here I was hoping it might just be some pesky relay or something. : (
