Considering 01 v70 t5 in about a month. popping noise? Topic is solved

I'm considering this 2001 v70 t5 and I might get it within 1 1/2 months. Read the text within the screenshot. Please let me know what y'all think the popping could be and what the fix may be.

What model is it? The popping sound could be anything front end related. Take it for a drive and look it over real good. Might need a spring seat of C V axle. How many miles?

I had a 2001 XC70 - not sure what you are looking at model wise. I also had a 2002 S60 na engine.

Regardless "pop" is not very descriptive, but on all my past Volvos when they "popped" it was a bad spring seat, (once a cracked spring). Other failed parts were clunks. You can visually tell if it is the spring seat by opening the hood and looking at the strut top mount. Turn the wheel and examine what is going on. There are write ups and videos on this if you look.

When I had a P0171 code it was a failed catalytic converter.

How one moves forward is about condition of the car and mileage, budget and how long you want to own it.

First step is to confirm timing belt condition - when was it changed? Then inspect the struts for leaks and performance. Also take a peak at the transmission fluid. Look at the tires. Those are the big ticket items on a $2500 car.

$2500 is pretty high for a car that may need a catalytic converter. At this price the car should be pretty stellar and low mileage. It also should have had the timing belt changed. For the catalytic code, in the end I put in an Eastern and the code went away. Spring seats is all I would do if you are on a budget and the struts are not leaking and are not shot. Lots of work, but the car is 20 years old.

As to the transmission, abscate is correct. The early 2001 transmission have solenoids that clog up and cause slamming. Sometimes a fluid flush will fix it, many times it won't. On mine I rebuilt the valve body. I also switched to Valvoline Maxlife (I know some say it is not as good - I believe it - but for me it worked just fine). Basically a Hail Mary $25 drain and fill.

It is about your budget and how long you plan on keeping the car coupled with your repair skill levels and enjoyment in wrenching.

2001 volvo v70 t5 208k miles.

I appreciate you specifying the issues. It's a v70 t5 208k miles. I want to own it indefinitely. I'm definitely on a fairly tight budget. Maybe $2100. I planned to talk him down to at least that. What is an Eastern? A brand? Yes I replaced all suspension on my 01 v70 base before I sold it. I made it 2x difficult because I accidentally put the left and right struts on opposite sides. And yes I LOVE wrenching. I don't like taking my car to the shop unless alignment or tires needed.

Yes Eastern is a aftermarket brand that makes catalytic converters.

In my experience, when a car is of unknown history, it is best to keep repairs to a minimum. Work on the basics to get it road worthy and when confident expand the scope of repairs.

With those kind of miles, $1500 would be on the high end for a car in excellent shape. I have seen them for $1000.00, with lower miles.

I'd be a little weary.

The T5 in 2001 was the 2.3l engine...top of the line model.
The 2.4l turbo engine was the next level down and the NA was the base.

If the guy can't get the engine size right, or is portraying the 2.4l as the T5, I'd keep looking.

Run, don't just walk away from this deal. 2001 model year V70s have a lot more problems than later years. Keep looking, you will find much better offers out there. Don't be smitten with the appearance of the cars. V70s generally look great. Buy one that has received proper maintenance either from a dealer/specialist shop or from a car guy. Look for receipts.

I have considered all of this. I have turned my back on the 01 t5. I am considering an 04 v70 t5 with 248,000 miles. Seller says he has all records for the last 8-12 years. A 75yo dude (not the kind of dude abscate thinks of

).
