Tape deck belt for an SC-815?

Post by wrybread »

I was doing the line in mod to my SC-815 and saw that it has a broken tape deck belt. Hopefully the mod still works, I haven't plugged it in yet. But does anyone happen to know where to buy a replacement belt, just in case I find some good ol mixes from the 90s at the thriftshop? So far I'm stumping Google. I gather these are rebranded Alpine stereos, so maybe an Alpine search term would be better?

Have you tried Crutchfield? They have been helpful on weird Volvo radio questions in the past, including Bluetooth and AUX/iPod plug ins.

eBay, Amazon, OnBuy (UK version of Amazon), and most local audio stores still stock them over here. Given the American penchant for retro/vintage I'd be shocked if it wasn't similarly available over there.

I looked around a bit but didn't find it on eBay or Amazon. At least not when naming the model (SC-815 or SC-816).

I found a few sources that said I could email them the length of the belt and they'll see what they have, which I'll probably do. But I'm hoping I can simply find a link to the right one.

If this is a rebranded Alpine, I wonder if I could use the Alpine model name. Does anyone happen to know what that is?

No need to overcomplicate it. Brand or whatever is irrelevant, just measure the length and search for 'tape deck belt', then match any generic item based on the length.

Get a mixed set of 100 Universals off eBay for ~$5.00. Use one out of the set that fits.

Very good idea on the pack of universals, thanks for that. I also realized the junkyard is an option.

$25.00 for the radio to get one drive belt that been drying out for 20+ years vs 100 fresh ones for $5.00 ... tough choice.

Would be nice to have a tape deck to experiment with. The line in mod combines the signal of the line with the signal from the tape deck. That causes weird things like playing a super loud "thunk!" when jumping between signals, which it'll when my phone goes silent for example. And I think it's what's causing my phone not to detect when the audio jack is inserted in the phone. Would love to figure out which wire on the tape deck needs snipping.
