Volvo VIDA J2534 Cable vs DICE?

Asking for a friend bc I cannot find inexpensive DICE Units on ebay.

I have the old-school DICE and Vida on a laptop.

A friend happens to see on ebay: J2534 Cable + Flash Drive (software in it).
You install it on your own laptop.

Has anyone here used this setup of J2534 Cable + Vida on a laptop?
Pros on cons of this J2534 vs old-school DICE?

That looks like a Mongoose JLR clone (Jaguar/Land Rover). You can find them for $40.00. They do work with VIDA and Volvo. If you have a 64 bit operating system most likely you will need to download the 64 bit drivers from DrewTech's website.

I bought a VXDIAG from Amazon for $60 and it seems to be working just fine with VIDA.

Volvo's Statements of the subject.

"For all vehicles with model year 2004 and later, equipped with OBD and reprogramming capability, manufacturers shall comply with SAE J2534. There are two different versions of J2534:

J2534-1 can be used to download software to vehicles from, and Including, model year 2004. J2534-1 manages software to control modules on CAN HS (Controller Area Network High Speed) that are emission related.

I am looking for more info on the Mongoose J2534 Cable.

From my random reading on the Mongoose J2534 Cable, it is probably OK but there are some complaints on amazon.

I know DICE works for me, but wonder if anyone in this forum has used Mongoose J2534 Cable and
can advise us?

That thread is from 2013, I would consider it irrelevant to your fact-finding mission re the current status of these cables. I agree with your other point though - need some (recent) user data!
