96 960: IT HAPPENED!

Headed out to parents house to collect $30 for a wash/wax job and BOOM! I mean GRIND and CLUNK. I am pretty sure the transmission went out. Not the car's fault though. I had read recently about burnt valves and the deposits that build up if the engine is not regularly driven at highway speeds (2500-3000rpm). Well that's me, I don't drive a bunch. Just in town to grocery store a mile away or parents house. I mean I did go to Tulsa recently. Lately, every other town run, I use Low and 3rd before going into Drive. Last night, shifting Low into 3rd, immediate kerplunk LOL. A mint car and I ruined it. Well it's not over. I'm going to remove the tranny to confirm then perhaps replace or rebuild. While it's down, O2 sensors and oil pan gaskets are due for replacement too. I meant to retire the 960 for the summer to minimize risk of blown head gasket in 90°F+ weather but not this way LOL. I didn't sleep much last night so I'm feeling drowsy and goofy. :D :P :lol:

I feel goofy for asking him that question.
So I think I busted it by gassing it a good bit while the driveshaft was grinding. Normally I'm tender on the gas starting out. Today I thought about it and I came to the conclusion that the grinding of the driveshaft vibration was tough on the transmission, working against the transmission. Therefore I think the task of shifting from Low to Third (at 2500-2600rpm) right after the heavy grinding stressed it out too much. Excuses LOL

You sure the driveshaft has not gone AWOL or the differential shelled out ... did you look?

Absent Without Official Leave ( AWOL ). Would not be the first time a driveshaft went missing.
Differential shelled out ... gears in the rear end stripped out. Acts like a empty shell. You go for it and nothing happens.

Thank you for specifying. Two details I forgot to mention. I heard the breaking happen underneath me. Also the engine will not crank. When I first parked it after the break, i tried the key and it simply turned like the battery was dead (I know it isn't dead). Then when I got back to my house by my dad pulling my car and I, I turned the key and it sounded like something was blocked and had 1-2mm of play. Don't ask me what. I don't know.

Put a 30mm socket on the crankshaft and see if you can turn the engine over. Turn clockwise. Counterclockwise can cause the timing belt to slip. Check the starter, make sure it is not loose.
