My Next Purchase Poll: opinions and recommendations wanted

Post by CIK7 »

*EVERYBODY that voted needs to revote because I updated and refined the car list with only 98 V70 and 740/940 wagon.*

I am practically asking for your two cents! LOL! When I buy a car, I buy it with the mindset that I am going to have it until the end of its life. I am not sure if anybody can understand how disappointed I am that my 960 is ruined. It was my favorite car. It is not a wagon, therefore not as great, but 75% better than my 98XC and 01 V70 base. If you have more to add, recommendations, or warnings please comment. This will help me figure out what to buy next.

You like the P2 S80 but not the T6? I've test droven an 04 S80 2.5T and though it was a little slow. I've also test droven an XC90 in the 3.2 and 2.5T. Thought the 2.5T drove a little better.

I absolutely like the T6 with the telephone installed and want one too. I'm concerned about getting one and then both turbos going bad. I actually have shunned the 2.5T up until now. The 2.5T sometimes is offered as awd. I've heard about the slow drive.
EDIT: I refined my list with only wagons and no awd. My dog and I both prefer the openness of the wagon.

P80 before 1998. Most simple in DIY works. 960 is a very good car, but some works are difficult. For example, repair of rear suspension or removing oil pan...
If my English is bad, please correct me

I updated my car list. I love all Volvos so much that I listed all that I like. Now it is refined.

For " ... reliability, daily driving, and DIY work" it's no contest, the 98's leave the FWD pack* far in the dust. I voted both NA and T5. The are so definitely easier to work on, but personally I would go with a T5.

*Disciaimer: I have zero knowledge on the RWD models so ignoring them as options.

So do you disagree with Azik09's statement about 'P80 before 1998'?

For me it it what is easiest to find parts for and maintain. Lot to be said for a FWD P80 NA. Relatively simple and parts are not too difficult to find still. I don't recommend the P80 AWD not just because of the fuel pump/rear sub-frame issue, but mostly because of the difficulty of finding spares unique to AWD cars.

I loved the RWD older models but where we live in Canada, unless you fill the trunk in winter with bags of sand and have a stick shift they are not ideal. I have had 740/760's including the Turbo 760 and a turbo 940. As wagons they are great and easy to work on.
240's are now rising in popularity and value. They, like the 145 before were great load lugging wagons but same RWD/auto trans issues where I live. I would have liked a 240 turbo just because.

The S80 was a car the dealer mechanics warned me away from in all versions, in particular the T6 due to engine issues mostly.

The 960/V90 is a great sleeper car. I always wanted a 960 Executive (as they were called in UK). Slightly longer wheel base but again a great driver on good roads.

I am less interested in the post 00 cars as the seats are not comfortable for me, although now having discovered the XC90 'R' design seats I could be tempted. The downside is the known issues of suspension wear, axle issues, prop-shafts and AWD problems. Again running a mile from a T6 with the crap GM trams and bad motor.

It takes all colors and fortunately we all have fondness for particular models and that is great. The one I missed was a 1959 PV444 wagon, one of 12 imported to Canada. Needed some work and had been fitted with the B20 motor in place of the tepid B14. The car was nicknamed 'Pickle' as it was green. How could you not want that!?

Neil.
