92-98 6cyl lifter ticking: is it common to specific years?

Im considering a second car. When I bought my 96 960 it had a ticking problem with the lifters which some of yall said was a common issue. Was that for the 95-96 or was that for the entire duration from 92-98 or 95-98? Did Volvo address the lifters ticking issue in the later years before they changed from s90 to s80? Who has experience with these 9 series? Robert told me it was a rare problem but others on here have said its a common issue.

Lifters are the same for all Volvo modular engines from 1991 to 1998 (4,5 and 6cyl), when hydraulic lifters were replaced by calibrated tappets. So I think ticking is a question of poor oil quality and venerable age of these cars.

Common problem on the 6 cylinder 2.9L. The O-ring on the Oil Pickup Tube cracks and then it is like sucking through a straw with a hole in it. Still works but not as effective.

Not enough oil get to the lifters to pump them up fully. That is the source of the clicking. It will not hurt the engine as long as there is some oil getting to the lifters but, you will not get top performance because the valves do not open all the way.

Drop the Oil sump and replace the O-ring on the Pickup Tube.
