Unknown wire location

Post by sicknoto »

I recently took the engine out of my 2000 Volvo v70 and now that I am putting the engine back in I seem to have forgotten to put place one of the wires. The wire that I am having trouble with is a brown wire that is located by the starter. I cannot tell if it is a ground or power and I have no idea what it would go to. I have the starter in place and the manifold is still off.

Does it have a spade connector on it? Or does it have a round flat circular connector?

If it is the first is it the low voltage feed to the starter? There is a connector on the back of the starter near the main power cables.

A picture of the rough location might also help us here.

It has a circular connector. When I hooked it up to a multimeter it said it had 9 volts when I had the wire on the positive end and the negative on the negative terminal of the battery.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, not forgotten about you, just been busy. I don't have a wiring diagram for a 2000 available but had a look at my own 2000 R. Unfortunately the Turbo has a lot more stuff in that area it is hard to see anything in there. Also when I did the PCV clean up I replaced a lot of the wiring covers with the flexi-plastic tubes so cannot see where any wire are in terms of color or location.

I had hoped someone else would jump in. There is a ground cable that runs to the front of the engine block and bolts to the block.
I don't remember the gauge/color but it uses a 12mm (?) headed short bolt around 1" in length and blots near the middle of the block low down above the oil pan.

Come on guys someone else jump in and help here. I have seen pictures showing 3 wires connected to the starter post. 2 large red and and third smaller wire that seems to vary in color. Having read several threads on starter motors there is mention of a feed wire to the cooling fan, but the color has been seen as red, yellow, brown green.

I am now thinking this is connected to the starter terminal but can't find any wiring diagram showing this.

I’ll have a peek at mine this morning, stay tuned

The brown colour and circular connector are consistent with a ground wire

Brown is typically a ground color in these cars.
I don’t have hands on experience with 2000’s,
but I would also suspect it belongs on a bolt.

If it is coming from a piece of wire loom, it might
be helpful to know what other wire colors are
in that section of loom.

If this brown wire is a ground it would not have 9 volts when the battery cables are connected (If this is what I understand from your comment above).
